Community Bereavement Connection

What is the "Community Bereavement Connection?"

It is a network of groups and agencies that provide supportive services to those who are experiencing grief.  Grief can be a very lonely and difficult experience.  Knowing that others have experienced similar losses and have found caring support can help.  Archuleta, La Plata and Montezuma counties offer many such services that can help ease the loneliness.

We are never prepared for the death of a loved one.  The shock, pain, anger, sadness, feelings of guilt, longing, loneliness and confusion seem to overtake us.  We are searching for answers and seem to find only endless questions.

To help understand and cope with grief, we would like to suggest some resources that are available to help work through the grieving process.  One step toward healing is sharing with other people who have experienced similar loss through death.  They may be better able to understand the feelings and frustrations.  Support groups consisting of other grievers can provide a safe, confidential environment in which to share and exchange the feelings and problems associated with grief.  Following is a list of the support available in the area.

LOCAL SUPPORT GROUPS

ALZHEIMER'S FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP

The La Plata County group meets the fourth Monday each month at 12:00 noon at the Alzheimer's Association Office, 701 Camino Del Rio, Suite 115A in Durango.  For information call Elaine at 259-0122.  The Archuleta County group meets the first Monday monthly at 5:00 p.m. at the Pine Ridge Extended Care Center, 199 Bastille Dr. in Pagosa Springs.

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY

The La Plata County Unit meets the third Thursday each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Durango Cancer Center, 3801 N. Main Avenue in Durango.  Call Jean at 247-0278.

·          Cancer Support Group

This group meets every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Luter Cancer Center Library at 3801 N. Main Avenue in Durango.  It is open to anyone who has had a cancer experience such as a patient, caregiver, family member or friends.  The service is free.  Contact the ACS office at 247-0278 for more information.

HOSPICE OF MERCY

Hospice of Mercy provides a variety of bereavement services including individual and family grief counseling, as well as support groups.

·          Adult Grief Education & Support Groups

This group combines an educational and supportive approach to help bereaved persons move toward resolving their grief in a structured, confidential environment.  Experienced bereavement facilitators conduct each three-hour session once a week for 10 weeks.  Homework projects and exercises are encouraged to promote growth through the grief process.  Regular attendance is required since each session builds upon the previous one.  Persons who are at the point of wanting to work through their loss find this non-confrontational support group very helpful.  Groups are offered three times a year and are open to anyone in the community who has had a loss due to death.  Call 382-2000 or 259-1357.

·          Children's Grief Camp

Camp Cascade is held each year in September.  The camp is for children in the 2nd through 8th grade.  For more information call 382-2000.

Bereavement counseling may be a benefit of a subscriber's coverage with Rocky Mountain HMO.  Call Member Services at 1-800-843-0719 for more information.

WELL ELDER PROGRAMS

There are three programs that make up the Well Elder Programs at this time.  Mercy Medical Center, AARP, Colorado Division of Insurance, Area Agency on Aging and Hood Mortuary sponsor the programs.

·          Senior Insurance Advisory Program

For ten years, trained volunteers have assisted people who have questions and concerns about Medicare and secondary insurance.  For example, volunteers have helped people who literally have a shoebox full of paperwork from doctors, hospitals, Medicare and insurance companies, and have no idea how to make sense of the chaos.  Volunteers help answer questions over the phone or in person.

·          The Reminiscence Program

This group of trained volunteers reaches out to homebound or institutionalized members of the community.  Visiting at least one hour per week, and using reminiscence as a tool for interacting, everyone "wins" as the reminiscer relives pieces of his or her life.  This allows the volunteer to develop a relationship with the individual whose stories from the past often give hints of how to live the present.  Some volunteers may help reminiscers write or tape their stories to be shared with their families and generations that follow.

·          AARP / Widowed Persons Service

Call Julie Madden at 382-2000 for information on the following items.  As with the other services, trained volunteers (who are also widowed and have resolved some of their grief issues) offer support to newly widowed men and women in the form of:

Outreach - providing volunteers who have been widowed to visit the newly bereaved and discuss on a one-to-one basis the adjustments to the challenges of widowhood.

Social Opportunities - breakfast gatherings are offered in Durango, Bayfield, Ignacio and Cortez once a month.

Education - trainings, videotapes for loan, teleconferences and grief-related articles in monthly mailings from WINGS support group.

Referral Service - providing widowed persons with information of other resources available in our community.

Peer Support Group - WINGS (Widowed In Need of Group Support) evening group meets on the third Tuesday each month at La Plata County Fairgrounds.  For information call Julie Madden at 382-2000.
