February 3, 1930 — November 5, 2024

Durango, Colorado

Andy Robert Saez, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away November 5, 2024, in Durango, Colorado. Born on February 3, 1930, in Orange, California, Andy dedicated his life to service, family, and the pursuit of passions that brought him joy.

A man of many talents, Andy began his career at the tender age of 10, distributing magazines before moving on to become a photographer printer for the Orange Daily News. His journey took a significant turn in the early '50s when he joined the Orange City Police Department, serving with distinction until 1959. Subsequently, he was hired as a Special Agent with the Santa Fe Railroad, where he later spearheaded the Better Freight Handling Division, retiring in 1988. Even in retirement, Andy's enthusiasm for his work continued as he served as a Special Agent with the DS&NG.

Andy was not just defined by his career; he had a vibrant personality that drew people to him. Known for his incredible ability to recall facts, coupled with a gift for storytelling and an impeccable sense of humor, he made friends wherever he went. Andy loved to be around people, frequently engaging in meaningful conversations and sharing delightful anecdotes.

His hobbies were as colorful as his personality. With a fervent passion for trains—of all scales and sizes—he was often found camping across the country, waiting eagerly to photograph his favorite locomotives. A true enthusiast, he cherished his collection of Model A Fords, regularly attending air shows and enjoying every moment spent immersed in his interests. Those who knew him fondly remember his character; he was fun-loving and exuberant, always seeking new adventures.

Andy proudly served in the Naval Reserves beginning in 1947. In November 1950, he was called to duty during the Korean Conflict, serving aboard the USS Alfred A Cunningham DD752 as a Radioman 3rd Class (RD3). His military service was a point of pride, demonstrating his commitment to his country.

Throughout his life, Andy accomplished remarkable feats that filled him with pride. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, became a Master Mason with the Masonic Lodge in Orange, California, and was a member of Scepter Chapter Order of Eastern Star. His participation extended into the Model A Ford Club of America, where he was elected president of several chapters.  He was a proud member of the Native Sons of the Golden West.  His involvement didn't stop there; he was also a dedicated member of the Durango Lions Club and served as president of the Animas Valley Railroad.

Andy leaves behind a loving family that includes his wife of 75 years, Lucille; daughter, Donna; grandsons, Karl and Kyle; and great-grandchildren Mateo and Lillian Rose. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
