Norma Barnes

July 28, 1927 — March 11, 2018

Norma Helen Barnes of Durango Colorado died on March 11, 2018. Norma was born in July 1927 in Santa Monica, California. Norma met her future husband Jim when he was on liberty from the Navy. Norma and Jim were married in 1947. They had 3 children together, Mike, Carol an Lori. Since James was raised in Colorado, it became their desire to move back to Colorado as empty nesters. In 1977 they bought Bob and Bill’s Trading Post. After a few years, they decided to get a small parcel of land on the Mesa. It was at that time both Jim and Norma worked for the school district. Norma was the custodian and cook at Sunnyside Elementary. In 1991, she retired to being at home. She loved working in the garden, cooking and crocheting. She had a gift with yarn and made the most beautiful blankets and linens. She would get great joy from creating and sharing her finished blankets with loved ones. Norma is survived by her husband Jim of 70 years, 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held on May 6, 2018 at the Florida Mesa Grange, 656 CR 172 at 11AM. Memorial donations can be made to Mercy Hospice House.
