Obituary

Blake Allen Nelson, 50, of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, passed away unexpectedly on October 14, 2026.

Born on July 22, 1976, in Longview, Texas, Blake was the only child of Gay Hull and the late Glenn D. Nelson. He grew up in Longview, Texas and graduated from Pine Tree High School in 1995 and attended Metropolitan State University of Denver after his military service in the Navy.

Blake proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a submarine sonar specialist (STS3) aboard the fast-attack submarine, USS Albany (SSN-753), where he spent long months beneath the seas to include the Persian Gulf. During his service, he earned his Submarine Warfare Insignia, the Dolphins. His dedication to his country reflected the strong work ethic, discipline, and commitment that characterized his life. Blake frequently spoke of his time aboard the Albany and the shipmates he served alongside.

His passion for sports began at an early age through the special bond he shared with his father. Whether playing basketball, golf, tennis, or snowboarding, Blake’s competitive spirit was always evident. His remarkable knowledge of sports made him a natural participant in any sports conversation, especially when it involved his beloved LSU Tigers. As a snowboarding enthusiast, Blake eventually made his home the past few years in the beautiful mountain community of Pagosa Springs, Colorado.

Blake possessed a wonderful sense of humor and a unique ability to recognize and appreciate the funny moments in everyday life and in those around him. Handsome, personable, and fiercely loyal, he valued his friendships and the memories created along the way.

Blake will be remembered for his devotion to family and friends, his competitive spirit, his quick wit, and his proud service to his country. Though his life was cut far too short, the laughter he shared, the friendships he nurtured, and the memories he created will continue to live in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Blake is survived by his daughter, Sydney; his mother, Gay Hull (Jerry); Stepmother, Patti Nelson; his aunts, Diane Morrison, Brenda Blackburn, and Janice Fancher; his uncle, Mark Simmons (Lesa) and numerous cousins, extended family members, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Glenn D. Nelson; and his grandparents, Pauline and Lloyd Simmons, J.D. and Alice Nelson, and O.E. Prior.

The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you and appreciation for the Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico VA hospitals and clinics physicians and staff who provided excellent care to our son throughout his adult life.

Military graveside services honoring Blake’s life and service to his country will be held Friday, November 6, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado. A

Celebration of Life will follow, with additional details to be announced.
