Berna Deane Briggs

Berna Deane Briggs (nee Metz) died peacefully at her sister's home in Durango, Colorado on January 8, 2021 at the age of 89.

Bernie was born near Cedar Hill, New Mexico on December 29, 1931 to Albert and Ruby Metz. She was the oldest daughter of eight children, and had four sisters and three brothers. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Donald E. Briggs of Durango, Colorado. Bernie and Don have three children, Nila (Russell) Stearns of Bakersfield, California, Donald (Sandrina) Briggs of Riga, Latvia and Jason (Suzanne) Briggs of Colorado Springs, Colorado, 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Bernie grew up in Denver, Colorado Springs and Durango. Her career as an elementary school teacher began in Ely, Nevada but she soon returned to Durango to marry Don on May 13, 1953. The most important parts of her life revolved around her faith, her family and her community. She and Don were always available to lend a helping hand, a word of compassion, a meal or a place to stay. Bernie had a warm and generous heart, and was a mother to many more than just her three children. As she got older, Bernie would often call to check on family and friends to make certain that "all is well" with each one.

Berna Deane's life will continue to influence those closest to her heart and the many friends she made during her lifetime. Viewing will be held at Hood Mortuary on Saturday, January 16, 2021 from 10 am to Noon. A graveside service will follow on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Greenmount Cemetery. Richard May and Daren Kindred will officiate the ceremony. Contributions in Bernie's name may be made to Hospice of Mercy.
