Carla "Elisi" Jean Chandler Santiago passed away at the age of 75, still looking at the world through rose tinted glasses. She will always be a Cherokee Cowgirl with a gypsy soul. As her cherished Bob Dylan once sang; “Some people seem to fade away but then when they are truly gone, it’s like they didn’t fade away at all.” This will always be true for Carla Jean Chandler. Born on February 12, 1950, Carla graduated from Durango High School in 1968 and went on to live a life characterized by spirituality, faith, trials and tribulations. She was a Colorado Cherokee Native that honored her heritage through her beliefs and dedications. Carla was preceded in death by her father, Robert Chandler, whom passed away before his time. She is survived by her mother, Wanda; stepfather, Frank; sisters, Donna, Paula, & Vanessa; her six children, Jason, Jerome, Daniel, Rachel, Stella, & Olivia; and her eight grandchildren, Dylan, Logan, Cassidy, Elijah, Lily, Harper, Ethan, & Noah. Carla was also a loyal supporter of St. Ignatius Parish & St. Columba Catholic Church, where she deepened her spiritual connections and served her Lord. Her personal interests reflected her spiritual journey in both faith and connection to her native roots. She was devoted to studying with the Lord, and Mother Earth. She expressed this in her journaling, and beautifully unique collages. Carla also had a passion for collecting the rocks and feathers she found while wandering, hiking and exploring her Southwestern home. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Joseph's Indian School in Carla's memory, honoring her spirit and faith. She tells me we mustn't be sad Because finally she's pain free. She's found her place in heaven Underneath an old oak tree. When I look up to the sky, I'll tell you what I see. I see my mother, And she's looking back at me. The sun shall rise, and sure to set. Her time has come, have no regret. Her life she lived, we sure all know. A better place, she had to go. Rejoice today at her end, It’s time that our hearts shall mend.
