David Paul
McGowan
May 7, 1959 — Jul 17, 2026
Durango
David Paul McGowan, of Durango, Colorado, died at home on July 17, 2026, after an unexpected illness.
It’s hard to squeeze all of the things Dave was to his family and friends, especially his wife, Ann and sons, Jared and Jack, into a few paragraphs.
A Nebraska native, Dave’s personality was characterized by a strong work ethic, deep-rooted loyalty, and a down-to-earth demeanor. Dave showed his devotion, not through grand gestures, but, through a lifetime of steady sacrifice, support and love for his family.
To Ann, Dave was that rare blend of fun, loyalty, and adventure. They met poolside in Las Vegas, married in Phoenix, and enjoyed living in and traveling to far flung places. Hiking mountains and rainforests became an enthusiastic endeavor that left an indelible mark on both of them. Dave loved fishing, as much for the sport, and according to him, ‘the places fishing takes you.’
The consummate story-teller, Dave was often called upon to relay a story, rather than the person to whom the event happened. He had a knack for building the story, perfect timing, pausing for dramatic effect and of course, offering comic relief. The irony was that Dave didn’t consider himself a funny man.
Dave would often boast that he was ‘one of the first stay-at-home Dads’, when doing so was rare. His dedication to raising two sons was seen in fishing and family fishing tournaments, summer projects that involved a broken-down Ford Bronco that teenage boys later enjoyed, fall and winter hunting expeditions and being a steadfast supporter of teenagers, even when it might not have been justified. He missed one summer vacation, staying at home in rural Nebraska, to shave and re-paint their historic three-story home.
Dave’s five siblings include: Tom, Shaunna, Jackie, Deidre and JJ.
You will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved you, Dave. ❤️
Dave will be honored and remembered at a later date with family and friends.
Memorials in Dave’s memory are kindly suggested to Hospice Mercy: 175 Mercado St. Suite 131, Durango, CO 81301-8296.
