Obituary

Dwight Spaulding Burgess, age 90 passed away peacefully on May 17, 2026 at Sunshine Gardens, Durango Colorado.

He was born on September 5, 1935 in New Jersey.

Dwight lived a full and adventurous life, traveling and working all over the world, especially in Africa. An alumnus of the University of Virginia, originally a geologist, he joined the diplomatic service and began his career with the United States Government until his retirement. He leaves behind three children, Susan, Stephanie and Sam (Dwight Jr.) and grandchildren, Giuliano, Camila, Zachary, Benjamin and Cecelia. His younger brother, Richard Burgess and his family also survive him.

During his long life, Dwight married twice, his second wife Katherine passed away last year and was a well known and important figure in Durango literary circles. Dwight felt the loss of Katherine and missed her deeply. They had shared many travels together and eventually made a wonderful life together in Durango, Colorado, where Dwight joined the Rotary Club and he and Katherine continued with their travel business.

Dwight had a great sense of humor and a quiet demeanor. We will remember happy times on safari in Africa, holidays in the Alps, learning to ski, road trips all over the world and visiting beautiful places around Durango with him. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
