Obituary

Francis Baker Peña, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, peacefully departed this world on August 16, 2026, at a hospital surrounded by love. Born on March 17, 1958, in Shiprock, New Mexico, Francis lived a life full of love, laughter, and dedication.

Francis was the cherished son of Frank Baker Peña and Frances Mae Smith, both of whom predeceased him, along with his beloved sister Tracy Morgan Peña and nephews Kesmond Morgan and Emerson Griffith. He is survived by his devoted children, Aaron Peña and Sara Peña, daughter-in-law Misty Beyale-Peña, and his treasured grandchildren, Nevaeh Peña and Akiara Peña, who were the light of his life. Francis also leaves behind his loving sisters, Gail Peña and Misty Wilson.

After graduating from Ignacio High School, Francis proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. His commitment to hard work was evident throughout his career, as he became a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator and laborer at Gosney Construction. Francis also dedicated many years to working within the Southern Ute Tribe, where he made lasting contributions and friendships.

Francis’s love for the Denver Broncos was legendary. From childhood, he was a devoted fan, never missing a game and always seen sporting one of his many Broncos hats. An avid outdoorsman, he cherished hunting during the winter months and found joy in four-wheeling off-road with his trucks. His drives around the reservation were a cherished routine, offering him peace and reflection.

At home, Francis delighted in watching movies, with Godzilla holding a special place in his heart. His humor and joy for life were infectious, as he loved to make others laugh with his lively jokes and stories.

Time spent with his family, especially his granddaughters, son, daughter-in-law, nieces, and nephews, brought him immense happiness.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Francis Baker Peña will be held on August 21, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Southern Ute Chapel, located at 256 Ute Road, Ignacio, Colorado 81137.

Francis’s legacy of love, laughter, and dedication will continue to inspire all who knew him. His warm smile and generous spirit will be dearly missed, but he will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched.
