Gregory Stephen “Steve” Wheeldon was born in Pocatello, Idaho on July 22, 1949, (his mother’s 21st birthday) to Dorothy Louise “Dottie” and James Wheeldon. Steve “galloped away into the sunset” on October 15, 2025, after a short 3 month battle with Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer, a rare and very aggressive form of this disease. After a short hospital stay due to complications from his cancer treatment he was able to return home where he was thrilled to be at his ranch where he could watch the baseball playoffs and enjoy time with his family and dogs.
When Steve was 11 years old, he moved with his mother and brother to Salt Lake City, Utah where he remained until he graduated from the University of Utah. In 1967 he married Shauna Karpowitz, and they had two children, Sean and Stephenie. Steve and his family moved to Southern California to accept his first big job as a Certified Public Accountant at the accounting firm Price Waterhouse. After several years of working at top-notch accounting firms in the Los Angeles area, he acquired the experience necessary to branch out on his own and get out of the “big city”. He was drawn to Durango, Colorado, reminiscent of his small-town roots, where he found his calling with his horses and wife, Jeannie. Steve quickly became a partner in the accounting firm of Stolberg, Brown and Wheeldon, and later became a Certified Financial Planner and formed an investment management firm, now Intelligent Investment Management, LLP. Steve also enjoyed helping Jeannie with her theater and hot air balloon businesses. Together they spent lots of time traveling, riding and raising horses, playing golf, scuba diving, watching major league baseball games, enjoying time outdoors and watching sunsets.
Steve is survived by his wife of 37 years, Jean B. Wheeldon “Jeannie”, children, R. Sean Wheeldon and Stephenie (James) Brost, and grandchildren, Kyla and Keagan Brost.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, October 28th at 2 p.m. at Summit Church, 2917 Aspen Drive, Durango, CO, 81301, followed by a graveside burial at Greenmount Cemetery.
