Harry John Baxstrom, of Bayfield, Colorado, died on September 2, 2026, in Bayfield. He was 78.

When asked about his career, he often shared the tale of the day he trimmed the toenails on a grizzly bear.

Born on May 6, 1948, in Montezuma County, Colorado, Harry built a life marked by service, dedication, and a deep connection to the people and communities of Southwest Colorado. He served in the United States Army and went on to pursue an education that prepared him for the work that would define much of his life. He attended Cortez High School, graduated from Fort Lewis College, and earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University in 1977.

In 1978, Harry began large and small animal veterinary practice in La Plata County, a career through which he cared for animals and served generations of families and ranchers. He was known not only for his professional skill, but also for the warmth of his personality. Kind and generous, with a great sense of humor, he was a natural storyteller. When asked about his career, he often shared the tale of the day he trimmed the toenails on a grizzly bear, a story that reflected both his wit and the memorable experiences of his years in veterinary medicine.

Beyond his profession, Harry had a passion for chuckwagon cooking. It was one of the pursuits that brought together his love of tradition, community, and hard work. He was one of the founders of the LaPlata/Archuleta Cattlemen Chuckwagon Gathering nearly 25 years ago, an accomplishment that remained a source of pride and reflected his lasting contribution to the region.

Harry is survived by his wife, Donnalee Baxstrom, with whom he shared a marriage that began in 1967. He is also survived by his daughter, Lavenia Taylor, together with her husband, Vincent Taylor, and their son, TJ Taylor; and by his son, Ashley Baxstrom, together with his wife, Law Dawn Baxstrom, and their son, Jagger Baxstrom. In the lives of his family, he leaves a legacy of devotion, humor, and generosity that will be remembered with affection.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Glynn, and his father, Charles Baxstrom.

A graveside service will be held on September 12, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Pine River Cemetery, 405 Co Rd 501, Bayfield, Colorado 81122. The service will be officiated by Pastor Chris Bernard of Life Church.
