Virgil Headrick Jr

August 3, 1931 — November 19, 2016

Durango native, Virgil “VJ” Headrick, Jr., passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, November 19, 2016. He was 85.

VJ was born on August 3, 1931 at Mercy Hospital in Durango. He attended Whittier Grade School, Central Grade School and Smiley Jr. High, all in Durango, before graduating from Durango High School in 1949. VJ graduated from Fort Lewis College, Durango, in 1957 and from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1959 with a BA in geology.

He married Maxine Cummings on January 21, 1951 in Durango.

VJ served in the US Navy from 1951 to 1955, stationed in San Diego. He was discharged a First-Class Petty Officer.

From 1959 to 1973, he was an electronic technician and manager of Durango Cable TV. He then went to work for the Colorado State Highway Department, later called Department of Transportation (CDOT), where he was utilities inspector and worked with Avalanche Control, which he truly enjoyed – shooting snow slides on all the mountain passes around the area. He retired from CDOT in 1993.

VJ was a member of the Durango Elks Club (BPOE), Durango Gun Club, Animas Museum, Durango 100 Club and Hillcrest Golf Club. His parents bought a cabin and became members at Electra Lake in 1943; he grew up on the lake and enjoyed fishing, boating and spending time at the cabin until his death. He has been a member at Electra Sporting Club since 1979. He also enjoyed golf, hunting, square dancing, playing bridge and reading. He loved history and the whole outdoors; was fascinated with all wildlife, marine life, reptiles and insects, along with plants and rock formations. All his friends will remember the many stories he would tell of Durango’s history.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Mary Headrick; and his sister Marlene Balke.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Maxine “Macky” Headrick; daughters: Terri Headrick and Vicki (Danny) Hagler; along with many loving friends and extended family.

Services will be held at a later date. Friends are invited to sign the online remembrance book at www.hoodmortuary.com.

Donations may be made to La Plata County Humane Society, 10 Burnett Ct, Durango, CO 81301 and/or Animas Museum, 3065 W 2nd Ave, Durango, CO 81301.
