James "Jim" Bertrand

April 29, 1939 — September 29, 2025

Durango

Jim Bertrand (04/29/1939 – 09/29/2025) “Doe Doe, Jimmy, George, Bertrand, Daddy, Dad, Pop, Bapa,” died unexpectedly and with peace in his heart on a Monday evening after a beautiful autumn walk. Beloved husband to Buddie for 62 years, cherished father of Jim and Bonnie, sweet, generous grandpa, “Bapa”, of Bryan and Alex.

Born in Houston on April 29, 1939 to Jay and Gussie Bertrand, Jim was the younger brother to his sister Bonnie. He graduated from Lamar High School in Houston and went on to attend Stanford University, followed by two years of service in the navy aboard the U.S.S. Hornet. While in the military Jim met the love of his life, Buddie. ONE day after his discharge, they were married. They then moved to Austin where Jim attended UT Law School. After law school, Jim and Buddie moved to Houston and he became a partner at Vinson and Elkins, where he worked for over 30 years.

More than the events of his life, Jim was defined by his love of and devotion to his family. Jim was a noble man, as a husband, father, and community member. He was a steadfast, warm partner and beloved husband to Buddie, always with a twinkle in his eye and by her side with all that life brings. We celebrate their shared joy of music, reading, and learning. Their married life was full of love, humor and resilience; they were a couple whose presence enhanced everyone around them.

Jim was a guiding light as a father to Bonnie (5-2-1972) and Jim (8-28-1969), with a tender heart of great courage and unconditional love. Jim was unafraid to challenge his children and grandchildren, and by doing so he taught them integrity, growth and all that is possible when we show up and are vulnerable. Jim was the heart home of his family. He led a life of hard work and awakening, one that shows us that we can grow and expand in a spirit of joyful gentleness. Above all else, Jim just loved.

Jim was preceded in death by his sister Bonnie Bliss Bertrand Chernosky and his nephew Marvin Chernosky, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Buddie; his son Jim and wife Kerry; his daughter Bonnie and husband Aaron; his grandsons Bryan and Alex; his nephew Jay Chernosky and family. He will be in his family’s hearts forever.
