John was born in Durango Colorado on April 24, 1954 to John and Edna Pearl (Gilchrist) Cugnini. He was raised on his parents’ Florida Mesa ranch and was a life-long resident of the area. He died January 11, 2024 at Mercy Hospice Home surrounded by family. John attended Durango High School and San Juan Vocational-Technical school. John joined the United States Air Force and served at Holloman Air Force Base near Alamogordo, New Mexico. He was a certified diesel mechanic/welder and worked for several businesses in the Durango area including Tamarron, Century Equipment, the City of Durango, and the Colorado Department of Transportation. John continued to help his parents run the family ranch until their deaths and continued to live there helping his children run the ranch.
John was married for twenty- eight years to the mother of his children Dolores Cugnini before their marriage ended in divorce. John was preceded in death by his parents, and a half-brother Pete Oliver. John is survived by his children Missy (Dale) Cugnini-Wonderling, Michael Cugnini (Kelly), and stepdaughter Michele Campbell (Cole Man Har). Six grandchildren also survive John including Malissa Davis, Rozlyn Davis, Tyler Cugnini, Jessie Bingham, Rylie Loftis, and Keyton Cugnini. Four great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.
John was known for his infectious laugh that would light up a room, was an avid bowler, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and loved anything electrical, especially his electronic gadgets.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Durango Cowboy Church on February 17, 2024 at 11:00. A meal will follow.
