John O'Hea Wisner

April 8, 1923 — April 13, 2024

Durango, Colorado

John Wisner was born in Gomez Palacio, Durango, Mexico on April 8, 1923.  He was the only child of John W Wisner and Mary O Wisner.

He attended Stoneyhurst in England from the age of 11 through his senior year in high school.  John served in the Army during WWII as a tank commander of a Bradly tank.  As he spoke fluent French, he was at the head of his armored column.  He served under General Patton of the 4th Armored Division.  He was honorably discharged at the end of the war as a Sergeant.  After the war, he attended the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School.  Upon graduation, he moved to Mexico City where he would work for Anderson Clayton and later in life, Burlington Industries.

He met his lovely wife Gaynor Thompson in 1948 and they were soon married.  They had their first son in August 1950.  They would go on to welcome five more children, four girls and a boy.

Later in life after visiting Durango for 13 years, they found their dream home in 1991 thanks to their son Jaime attending Fort Lewis College.  Through Gaynor, they established a new network of friends in this vibrant community.

John retired late in life and enjoyed his house and friends in Mexico City until he was 97 when he moved to Cancun to live with his daughter Clare.  After two years of living there, he moved to Durango, CO and lived at Evening Porch Assisted Living where he was cared for by his son Jaime.  He passed on April 13, 2024.  He was buried next to his wife Gaynor at Greenmount Cemetery on April 21, 2024 at 3 pm.  There will be a later service in Mexico City at a later date.

John is survived by five of six children, Jay, Kristin, Clare, Hilary and Jaime, his youngest daughter Gaynor passed in 2023.  He is also survived by twenty grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren.
