Joseph Wayne
Tate Nevaquaya
January 29, 1972 – April 25, 2026
Joseph Wayne Tate Nevaquaya was blessed with life on January 29, 1972, at the Lawton USPHS in Lawton, Oklahoma, to the loving parents Doc and Charlotte Tate Nevaquaya. As an enrolled tribal member of the Comanche Nation, with heritage also in Choctaw and Chickasaw, Joseph's roots ran deep. Growing up in Apache, Oklahoma, he received his education at Apache elementary schools and Apache High School, graduating with pride in May 1992. Joseph excelled in sports, notably basketball, football, and track, during his high school years. His passion for life led him to embrace powwow dancing, becoming a valued member of the Comanche Little Ponies Society and the Thü-we dance group. Traveling extensively with the Little Ponies Society, Joseph found joy in powwows across the states, especially in Oklahoma. Given the revered Comanche name Black Knife, he was also affectionately known by many nicknames - Juicy, Joe Blow, Joey, but Joe remained the name that resonated most. To his nieces and nephews, Joseph was the uncle who made each feel extraordinary with unique nicknames, showering them with love. The journey of life brought Joseph to Ramada Cloud, the love of his life, whom he married on December 4, 2010. Building a home in Ignacio, Colorado, Joseph indulged in his creative side through art, crafting intricate beaded necklaces and graphite work. His heart belonged to the OU Sooners Football, eagerly awaiting each football season. The Bear Dance was another cherished event, a celebration that filled him with anticipation and joy. Over time, Joseph developed a profound appreciation for the Ute people and his life in Colorado, spreading warmth and humor wherever he went. His infectious laughter and teasing spirit made him a beloved figure. Joseph shared his final morning with loved ones on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at the Mercy Hospital in Durango, Colorado.
Joseph leaves behind his devoted wife Ramada Nevaquaya of Ignacio, CO; his brothers Edmond Tate Nevaquaya of Apache, OK, Timothy Tate Nevaquaya of Tulsa, OK, and Calvert Tate Nevaquaya of Apache, OK; his sisters Joycetta Nevaquaya Harris of Anadarko, OK, Sonya Tate Nevaquaya of Moore, OK; and his cherished Aunt Etta Carrillo of Albuquerque, NM. Preceding him in death were his loving parents Doc and Charlotte Tate Nevaquaya, brother Sonny Tate Nevaquaya, and sisters Jereaux Nevaquaya Sanders and Amanda Sue Bordeaux. Though Joseph did not have children of his own, his love for his nieces and nephews knew no bounds, leaving an indelible mark on their lives. He is deeply loved and cherished by all who knew him.
