Kelly Lauren
Smith
Jan 30, 1977 — Aug 12, 2026
Montana
Kelly Lauren Smith, 49, beloved wife, mother, sister, daughter, and friend, died unexpectedly on the morning of August 12, 2026, after an unexpected medical event.
Kelly was born on January 30, 1977, in San Benito, Texas, to Graham Browning Smith and Lana Jean Smith (Boyd). She grew up in Austin, Texas, the city that would become the setting for some of the most important chapters of her life.
It was in Austin that Kelly met Brendan. They fell in love, started their life together, and began their family there. Their daughter, Lydia, and son, Asher, were born in Austin. Their family later moved to Montana, where their youngest son, Hiram, was born in Kalispell.
Family was at the center of Kelly’s life. She devoted herself to the particular needs of each of her children, learning who they were as individuals and shaping their home around them. She homeschooled for many years and poured an enormous amount of thought, care, and energy into giving her children a childhood and education suited to who they were.
But Kelly was more than the roles she held.
She was creative, intelligent, curious, and deeply contemplative, with a rich inner life and an enduring interest in what exists beneath the surface of things. She was drawn to metaphysics, spirituality, consciousness, nature, art, and painting, and she explored pagan traditions as part of her continuing search for meaning and connection.
Kelly had a particular appreciation for the distinction between surface and depth. She was interested in the things that could not be understood merely by looking at them from the outside—the hidden structures, meanings, contradictions, and possibilities underneath.
Before becoming a stay-at-home mother, Kelly was a hairdresser and salon owner. Her work gave expression to her creativity and allowed her to connect with people in an intimate and personal way. Later, that same creativity and attention to individual expression became part of the way she cared for her family and created a home.
Kelly leaves behind her husband, Brendan; her children, Lydia, Asher, and Hiram; her brother, Barry Smith; her sister-in-law, Jenny; and her nephew, Samuel. She also leaves behind extended family and friends whose lives were touched by knowing her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Graham Browning Smith and Lana Jean Smith (Boyd).
There is no way to fit a whole human life into an obituary. Kelly was not only the milestones of her life or the roles she filled. She was a person with an interior world entirely her own—with contradictions and questions, ideas and dreams, joys and struggles, things she understood about herself and things she was still discovering.
Kelly was here.
She loved. She created. She questioned. She cared. She struggled. She dreamed. She changed. She raised three children and built a life with Brendan across years and places and countless ordinary days.
Those ordinary days do not feel ordinary now.
And the depth of her life remains.
In lieu of flowers the family welcomes donations to help support Brendan and their children during this difficult transition.
