Larry Michael House

Larry Michael House died on August 19, 2026, in Durango CO, surrounded by his family. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1943, Larry was known for his wicked sense of humor and dry wit. Laughter was always present when he was around.

Larry first came to the Durango area in 1962 to work on a dude ranch during summer breaks from college. He fell in love with the area and built his life around all that the San Juan Mountains had to offer skiing, fishing, hiking and camping. After moving here, he became a ski instructor at Purgatory. He then continued working in the mountains for the San Juan National Forest Service.

He and Carol, his partner of 33 years, enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and beyond. He loved making friends with locals in other states and countries. Later in life, he and Carol bought Native American art and loved traveling in the U.S. selling to museums and galleries. When at home, he built two houses, made countertops, hiked, loved playing cards and was an avid reader. Larry remained a calm presence for all of us even during the 10 years with Lewy Body Parkinsons.

He is survived by his wife, Carol House, his sons Michael House (Amy), and Jesse House (Jodie), stepdaughters Tonya Jones (Billy) and Kristen Collins, 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. He was also blessed with two step granddaughters and their families..

*Larry’s memorial service will be September 12, 2026, at 11am at the covered Day Use Center at the Junction Creek Campground. To get there, go west on 25th street/Junction from Main Street for 3 miles, then drive two miles past the Gudy's Rest Trailhead. Turn left when seeing a sign indicating a left turn to get to the campground, then take the left road to arrive at the Junction Creek Day Use Pavilion.
