Obituary

Lewis H. Luchini passed away, at age 92, on January 9, 2026. Lewis was born in Durango, Colorado, February 4, 1933. He was raised on the family farm in Arboles, Colorado to Callisto and Catherine (Procarione) Luchini. He lived on the Luchini Ranch for 83 years. His parents and Sister, Marguerite Carlson, favorite Brother In Law, John Carlson, and Niece In Law, Sammie Carlson precede him in death.

Lewis rode a horse to school from 1st to 9th grade, then after 9th he rode a school bus to Ignacio. During his farming years he did various chores from milking cows, irrigating fields on foot, driving farm equipment, gathering many many eggs, helping with 2 huge gardens, keeping sheep, slopping pigs, raising turkeys, and riding horses to move cattle. He recalled having no tv and using a crank telephone with a party line. His first of MANY cars/trucks was purchased when he was 27. 

He graduated from Ignacio High School in 1951. Attended 2 quarters at Fort Lewis A & M College before returning to farming/ranching.

Lewis served in the US Army from 1956 to 1962 as Private 1st Class. First active duty in Germany, Denmark and Paris until 1958 when he received an Honorable Discharge. Upon returning to the US he served in the Army Reserves until 1962.

Lewis worked in several agricultural areas; on the Ranch, for a cousin in Eastern CO, Durango Coop and Southwest Ag farm machinery.

Lewis was very involved in politics serving 10 years as Archuleta County Commissioner, then 5 years Arboles Chamber of Commerce, 4 years LaPlata County Sherrif Department, 14 years Mount Allison Volunteer Fire Department, Mount Allison Grange, and Pine River Canal Board over 35 years.

After suffering a stroke in 2015 Lewis moved to Omaha, NE to be closer to relatives. He made friends in 3 different facilities, loved playing Blackjack, listening to musical groups, but never liked living in Nebraska.

Lewis is survived by Nephew, Kevin Carlson of Placitas NM, Nephew, Trent Carlson (Paula) of Highland Village TX, Niece, Lisa Maguire (Kent) of Omaha NE, 12 great Nieces and Nephews, 25 great great Nieces and Nephews.

Lewis will happily return to Colorado for burial at 11:00am June 6, 2026, in Allison Tiffany Cemetery, Allison, Colorado with Military Honors. Please join the family for lunch at Allison Grange Hall following graveside service.
