Obituary

Luke David Wholf Baxstrom, 32, passed away on July 12, 2026.

Born in Durango, Colorado, on July 15, 1993, Luke was raised in the mountain community of Pagosa Springs. After pursuing his education in Denver, his heart led him back home to the place he knew and loved best.

Luke was a craftsman, artist, firefighter and paramedic whose life was defined by both creativity and service. Passionate about helping others in their most vulnerable moments, he served his community with care. Yet, his deepest lifelong passion was art. A painter and illustrator, Luke picked up a brush or pencil every single day of his life, leaving behind a world made richer and more colorful by his unique vision.

To know Luke was to know a bolt of energy like no other. Luke burned his candle at both ends, he loved hard, he lived fast, and he left us too soon, with only memories of his bright light. He was effortlessly charming, fiercely confident, and wonderfully funny, with a mischievous wit that kept everyone around him smiling or yelling or both.

Above all, Luke possessed a deeply caring heart, especially when it came to his family. His absolute greatest joy in life was being an uncle—he loved his nephews, Crosby and Sylvester, more than anyone else and found his happiest moments simply watching them play and grow.

Luke was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Frances Wholf, and his paternal grandparents, Jacqueline and Harold Baxstrom.

He is survived and deeply missed by his mother, Rebecca Wholf of Pagosa Springs; his father, Kent Baxstrom (Lisa) of Mancos; his younger sister, Sable Wholf-Corley (Christian) of Pagosa Springs; his cherished nephews, Crosby and Sylvester, and his maternal grandfather, Richard Wholf of La Jara. He also leaves behind aunts, uncles, cousins, and a community of friends, colleagues, and loved ones who will forever remember his spirit.
