Obituary for Louis M. Rancatti

Durango resident, Louis “Rann” Manning Rancatti died of natural causes Sunday evening, March 27, 2011. He was 83.

Mr. Rancatti was born April 19, 1927, to Grace Leb Manning and Angelo A. Rancatti in North Adams, Mass.

Mr. Rancatti joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served during World War II in the Asia Theater and in the Korean War. Shortly after the Korean War, he enlisted in the U.S. Marines. During his career, he served as a U.S. Marine Drill Sergeant in San Diego, Calif., served in the Vietnam War and retired as a Gunnery Sergeant. Many of his recruits kept in contact with Rann for many years.

He met Patricia Bowen in Long Beach, Calif., and they were married in 1959. They had one son and two daughters.

In 1972, the Rancatti family moved to Bayfield, Colo., and owned and operated the Blue Spruce Trailer Park at the north end of Vallecito Lake. Many of the seasonal residents of the Blue Spruce remained close friends with Rann over the years.

In 1989, Mr. and Mrs. Rancatti built a home on the Florida Mesa. He enjoyed tending his garden and orchard of over 500 fruit trees and found great enjoyment in supplying apples to many friends and acquaintances.

Mr. Rancatti was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years. In 2004, he married Patricia Ryan. They moved to Dalton Ranch in 2008.

He is survived by his wife of seven years Patricia Ryan Rancatti of Durango, children Charles B. Rancatti and Ruth Schwartz of Durango; and Patricia Holley of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister Grace Iglesias of Southwick, Mass.; sister Irene Boyd and brother Everett “Sandy” Herrick of Holland, Mass.; and granddaughters, Kristin Horton and Rebecca Holley.

At his request, there will be no funeral or visitation. His wife will have a celebration of his life for Mr. Rancatti’s family and friends at a later date.
