Raymond L. Martinez

April 29, 1964 — April 30, 2025

Durango

Raymond Martinez born in Cortez, was raised in Mancos, Colorado, passed away on April 30, 2025, one day after his 61st birthday, surrounded by the love he gave so freely to others.

Those who knew Ray will remember a man of deep care, thoughtful action, and quiet strength. He listened more than he spoke, and when he spoke, it was with clarity, purpose, and compassion.

Ray’s life was defined by his unwavering devotion to family and community, and he was a beloved husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend. Fondly known as “Uncle Ray,” he helped raise and deeply impacted the lives of his nieces and nephews—Erika, Stephanie, Emilio, Amy, CJ, Garrett, Heidi, and Gunner—as well as his many great-nieces and great-nephews, whose laughter and stories brought him daily joy.

Ray’s presence in Mancos extended beyond his family; he served on the town board with integrity, always advocating for those whose voices were less often heard. He led not by force, but by example—holding the hearts of others while making wise decisions rooted in respect and fairness.

He is survived by his loving wife Heather Leavitt Martinez; mother, Dolores “Gawkie” Martinez, whose unconditional love he honored in all that he did; his sister Pam and Randy Smith and brother Paul Martinez, with whom he shared profound bonds; and his extended family and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond, with whom he shared a deep, unspoken understanding—one surely rekindled now in the beyond.

Ray believed that love doesn’t end; it simply changes form. He often said that when we pass, we carry on as unconditional love. He lived his life here in the same way.

In his memory, Ray would want us to laugh often, think deeply, and love wholly.
