Shirley Ann Newby

Shirley Ann Newby, age 86, went home peacefully to the Lord early in the morning of September 16, 2023, at home in Durango, Colorado. She was born in Newton, Kansas, and was raised in Hutchinson, Kansas. She was married to Robert L. Newby in 1957, and they moved to Denver, Colorado, in 1962 and raised four children. She worked many years as a kindergarten teacher’s aide at Riverview Elementary School and in later years worked in soup kitchens at various locations. Her dedication in helping other people and children was unsurpassed.

An avid walker and hiker, Shirley could be spotted faithfully walking around Durango regardless of the weather. She also enjoyed snowy weather and cross country skiing. In addition, she was an amazing cook and made everything from scratch.

Shirley is preceded in death by her husband Robert Newby, sister Doris, and brother Dale. She is survived by her children: Myra (John) Denigan; Parker Newby (Nancy Berry); Blaine Newby (Allie Molinda); Miles Newby; six grandchildren: Seth, Abigail, John, Anna, Joy and Margaux; and her sister Joyce Matthew.

A funeral service is planned for Saturday, September 23, 2023, at 1:30 pm at St. Columba Catholic Church in Durango, Colorado. A graveside ceremony will follow at Greenmount Cemetery.
